Your entry in any of the six events in the State NZ Ocean Swim Series puts you in the draw to win a trip to a Pacific Ocean Swim! One prize will be drawn at each event prize giving - the winner must be present to win.

Need a little more incentive?

By entering three or more 'I'm Going Long' swim events you are automatically eligible for series points and prizes awarded in April 2011 and you go in the draw for a trip to a Pacific Ocean swim. Your highest three points will be entered into the series competition. Competitors with the highest points at the end of the series will win either overall or age-group prizes.

Insaddition to the major prizes, you could win other spot prizes courtesy of the event’s sponsors. These are randomly computer-generated and winners must be present at prize-giving to win a spot prize.

NEW - 300m Individual and Team Swim

We wanted to give you a distance to wet your feet and get you into this great sport of ocean swimming. Enter as an individual or as part of a team. There are six team categories to choose from: male, female, mixed, family, corporate and school. All teams must have three members. All team members must swim the full 300m distance (like the individuals), and your team time is the average of all 3 members.

Event categories and prizes

Prizes will be awarded to overall and age-group categories at each event as explained below. Please be aware that you must be present at the prize-giving on race day to receive these awards.

Elite Swimmers- IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION
In order to be eligible for prize money in an individual event or a series competition a swimmer MUST select the 'elite' category when entering online or on a paper entry form.  Please note that by entering as an 'elite' swimmer you will not be eligible for age group prizes should you fall outside the Top 5 competitors in the 'elite' field. You will however be gaining points for the overall series position in the 'elite' field and therfore be eligible for top 10 prize money in the Overall Series (a minimum of three 'I'm Going Long' Ocean Swims must be complete).  An elite swimmer must race all events in this category and can not swap inbetween 'age group' and 'elite' fields.

Age-group categories

'I'm Going Long' swims
There are 13 age group and one Elite category in this event: under 15, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+, Elite (age irrelevant). In each age-group 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female will be awarded with medals and sponsor gifts and 1st male and female not wearing a wetsuit. Event age groups are determined by your age as at race day.  Please note that elite competitors will not be eligible for age group prizes.

'Step It Up' 1000m swims
There are seven age group categories in this event: under 15, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+. In each age-group 1st place will be awarded with a medal and sponsor gift. Event age groups are determined by your age as at race day.

'Give It A Go' 300m swims
There are seven age group categories in this event: under 15, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+. No prizes will be awarded in these categories on the day but event results and downloadable certificates hightlighting your place in your category will be available from our website results page.

Series categories and prizes - Long ocean swim events only

By entering three or more long ocean swim events you are automatically eligible for series points and prizes awarded in April 2010. Your highest three points will be entered into the series competition. Competitors with the highest points at the end of the series will win age-group prizes. Overall series prize money will only be allocated to 'elite' competitors.  Series age groups are determined by your age as at 1 January 2010.

Series age-group prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd-placed swimmers in the 13 age-group categories as details in the age-group categories section above.

Enter three or more 'I'm Going Long' swims and be proud to say, "I've swum the country!"

It's simple:

  • Enter three or more I'm Going Long swim events to qualify
  • First-placed overall male and female at events will both receive 100 points. All the following competitors will be awarded points as a percentage of the winner’s times
  • Each competitor’s best three results will be calculated at the end of the series to determine all series winners
  • To win an age-group prize, you will need to have the highest number of points in your age category over the series
  • Competitors who achieve an overall top ten prize will not be eligible to win in their age-groups
  • 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female will be awarded age-group prizes in eight age groups as detailed above.
  • Overall series male and female 'elite' winners receive $2,000 each
  • Series champions will be announced at the Series prize giving following the King of the Bays prize giving in Takapuna, North Shore. So, if you think you will be in with a chance to win, please plan to stay for the additional prize-giving
  • In the case of two competitors having equal maximum points, the winner will be decided as follows:
    • If at any time during the series the two tied competitors have swum in the same event, the winner will be the competitor who has biggest average winning margin over the other
    • If the two competitors have never swum in the same event, then the winner will be the competitor with the greatest average points margin between first and second place in the races they have won.

Make sure you plan your travel arrangements around this function so you don't miss out on the celebrations. We will be awarding our overall and age group series place getters as well as drawing a number of spot prizes. Everyone is invited, including spectators. A full service bar will be open and food will be available to order.


Say "I've Swum the Country"

Enter the series and be proud to say, "I've swum the country!"

It's simple:

  • Enter three or more 'I'm Going Long' swim events in the 2010-2011 season to qualify
  • First-placed overall male and female placegetters in an event will both receive 100 points. All the following competitors will be awarded points as a percentage of the winner's times
  • Each competitor's best three races will be calculated at the end of the series to determine all series winners
  • To win an age-group prize, you will need to have the highest number of points in your age category over the series
  • Elite competitors who achieve an overall top ten prize will not be eligible to win in their age-groups
  • 1st, 2nd and 3rd male and female will be awarded age-group prizes in thirteen age groups as detailed above.
  • Overall series ELITE male and female winners receive $2,000 each
    (Please note ELITE swimmers must enter all events in the ELITE category - by doing this you will not be eligible for age group awards)
  • Series champions will be announced at the Series Prize Giving
  • A series prize-giving will follow shortly after the King of the Bays prize-giving so, if you think you will be in with a chance to win, please plan to stay for the additional prize-giving. Details of the venue and times will be updated on this website nearer the time.
  • In the case of two competitors having equal maximum points, the winner will be decided as follows:
