A Trans-Tasman battle of the sexes will resume on Sunday for round three of the State Ocean Swim Series in Wellington, dubbed the Capital Classic.
In round two at the Bay of Islands, the 2009 world champion Melissa Gorman was the overall winner of the race, becoming the first female in the history of the State Ocean Swim Series to beat all the men home.

History was made in the Bay of Islands this morning as one woman taught the men a lesson in round two of the State New Zealand Ocean Swim Series.
The 2009 world champion Melissa Gorman of Australia dominated both the women’s and men’s fields in the State Paihia Classic, in her first venture on this side of the Tasman.
Gorman finished 22 seconds ahead of 18-year-old men’s race winner Stefan Talbot of Pakuranga and one minute 23 seconds ahead of Australian based Kiwi Cara Baker in the 3.3km swim from Russell to Paihia.

Dargaville accountant Kathryn de Bruin is hoping that when she takes the plunge in the State Pahia Classic Ocean Swim on December 3rd it will be third time lucky!
The 42yr old is determined to overcome the sea sickness that ruined her last attempt at completing the swim which is the second event in the nationwide six swim State NZ Ocean Swim Series.
“Two years ago I had done all the hard yards for training and a fortnight before the event I got an infection in my ankle and ended up on crutches. I was unable to do anything let alone swim which was totally devastating after all my hard work,” she said.

Kiwi swimmers Kane Radford and Cara Baker took their first steps towards Olympic qualification after winning the State Harbour Crossing in Auckland today. Radford (Rotorua) beat off the challenge from a stellar field including leading Australian Trent Grimsey to win the 2.9km open water swim from Bayswater on the North Shore to the Viaduct. The Queensland-based Baker had to fight off defending champion Charlotte Webby (New Plymouth) to claim the women’s title among 1300 participants in the first round of the State New Zealand Ocean Swim Series, staged in excellent conditions.

In perfect conditions and over one of the strongest fields ever assembled in Wellington Harbour, Kane Radford and Cara Baker took closely fought wins at the State Capital Classic Swim today.
More than 850 swimmers took to the water in race three of the State New Zealand Ocean Swim Series. The 2.8km premier event took swimmers from Oriental Bay around the iconic fountain and out to the lighthouse before returning to Freyberg Beach.

One of New Zealand’s premier open water swimmers Kane Radford won today’s State Russell to Paihia swim beating the largest and strongest field ever assembled in Northland.
In a closely fought race, Radford took line honours in the 3.3km swim over defending champion Bryn Murphy by just 8 seconds.
Near perfect conditions greeted the over 750 swimmers who took to the water as part of the State Russell to Paihia swim - race two of the State New Zealand Ocean Swim Series. In what is thought to be the largest open water swimming event Northland has ever seen, swimmers left from New Zealand’s first capital, Russell and finished on the beautiful shores of Paihia.
