He also served on the New Zealand Olympic Committee board.Matson was also president of the Oceania Swimming Association from its inception in 1991 until 2008.

Whether you're training for a triathlon, wanting some fitness training or just enjoy open water swimming, the State New Zealand Ocean Swim Series has a swim to suit you.
27th July 2011 at 19:40
There is an achievable goal to suit all ages and swimming abilities. For some, it could be to swim in the sea for the first time or for others, to go all out to be an age-group series winner! But why swimming? Everyone can walk or jog, why have we presented a new challenge? New Zealand has some of the most beautiful beachfronts and waterfronts in the world and we want to encourage everyone to take advantage of our greatest natural resource as well as building swimming skills and confidence in the open water. Breaking News- The State Sand to Surf to be run in Pilot Bay.
25th March 2011 at 13:23
After consultation with the Harbour Master's Office & Surf Lifesaving NZ a decision has been made to move the event to Pilot Bay in the interests of participant safety|
Hi there Breaking News- The State Sand to Surf to be run in Pilot Bay. I am writing to advise all participants of the State Sand to Surf event taking place tomorrow (26th March 2011) will now take place in Pilot Bay. I have just taken a first hand look at the conditions off Main Beach with Greg Miekle from the Harbour Masters office and the head of event safety from Surf Life Saving New Zealand, and we have all agreed the ocean conditions are unsuitable to run with the proposed courses tomorrow. This has left us no option but to run the event in the protected waters of Pilot Bay (and from looking at it less than hour ago, looks beautifully calm and protected from the wind). The event times will remain the same as advertised on our website. View here The event head quarters is the grass reserve at the corner of Salisbury Avenue and The Mall (next to the wharf). View map here The 'I'm Going Long' swim will be changed to a two lap 2km course. All other courses will remain the same length. The Pack Pick Up/Registration function today will remain at the same venue and at the same advertised time as stipulated on the State Sand to Surf web page. View here. We look forward to seeing you all at the Bay tomorrow morning. Please spread this news to fellow participants if you are able to. Kind regards Scott Rice Event Director State NZ Ocean Swim Series |

Swim for Christchurch - Canterbury Earthquake Appeal
28th February 2011 at 10:52
Thank you to all the swimmers that attended the Swim for Christchurch on Saturday. Your generous donations helped to raise $38,186.Fantastic effort!AUCKLANDERS TAKE THE PLUNGE FOR QUAKE APPEAL
Auckland’s Milford Beach was awash with goodwill this morning as an estimated 650 swimmers of all ages plunged into the ‘Swim For Christchurch’.
Over $38,186was donated by swimmers and their supporters with organisers citing individual donations as high as $10,000! All proceed from the swim were immediately banked into the Canterbury Earthquake Appeal account.
The idea for the fundraising swim was the brainchild of locals Simon Bucherer and Sarah Ley-Bucherer. The Bucherers mooted the idea on Wednesday afternoon with Scott and Natasha Rice, (organizers of the State Ocean Swim Series). The Rice’s mobilized a groundswell of support from the Auckland swimming community who turned out in force.
“Without the incredible support and enthusiasm from the swimming community and local volunteers we would never have been able to pull this off. We have been inundated with offers of help to spread the word about this event,” says Scott Rice.
Rice is quick to acknowledge the many organisations and individuals who pitched in to help including Surf Life Saving New Zealand, St John’s Ambulance, the local Police and Auckland Council.
Recreational swimmers as young as nine years old donned their wetsuits alongside well known faces Danyon Loader, Ben Fouhy, Ian Jones and former Olympic swimmers Hannah Mclean, Cameron Gibson and Jonathon Winter. World Surf lifesaving NZ representative, Steven Kent and Penny Marshall, Commonwealth Games Representative, led the charge in the charity 1km swim.

Background information
Statement issued by the State NZ Ocean Swim Series at 11.17am yesterday (Wed)
Given the tragic circumstances of the Christchurch earthquake the State Corsair Classic planned for this Saturday is now cancelled. The City is in a state of emergency for the next five days and this is not the time to bring large numbers of people together in Christchurch as residents of the City go about securing their lives and property.
While this will undoubtedly cause some disruption to those entered in this year’s event, we have thoughts only at the moment for the people of Canterbury and wish to extend our sympathies to all who have lost loved ones or suffered damage to their homes, place of work or indeed lost their livelihoods as a consequence of the earthquake and the incredible damage caused.
Further information will be communicated directly to all entrants of the Corsair Classic on Tuesday 1st March, but for now please join us in sending our thoughts to all who have been affected by these tragic events.

New swim course for Christchurch
9th February 2011 at 14:38
After consultation with Harbour Authorities and the local swimming community in the Christchurch region it has been deemed for reasons of swimmer safety that the I’m Going Long’ swim course advertised for our State Corsair Classic event as unsuitable for the average swimmer. This course was to see swimmers make their way around the lighthouse and down to Rapaki Point before returning to Corsair Bay.There are now two NEW weather dependant options for the I’m Going Long’ course on February 26th. The decision to run with either course will be made by the Race Director on event day after assessing weather conditions. This decision will be made solely in the interest of swimmer safety and well being. Option One is a new course utilizing the more protected waters in and around Corsair and Cass Bays. Option Two is the same two lap triangular course we have used over the last four years. We hope you understand our reasoning’s for this course change and that it doesn’t detract from your positive experience taking part. View the new courses here
Thanks!
