As part of Generation Homes’ partnership with the Sand to Surf event we asked for nominations of special people in the ocean swimming community so that we could find 3 deserving “Generation Homes Hometown Heroes”.
We had some great nominations come through but the standouts who were named our “Generation Homes Hometown Heroes” for 2018 were:
Steven Morris aka “Seamen Morris” – one of the founders of the infamous “Seamen Ocean Swim Squad” which brings ocean swimmers together daily for a midday swim out off Mount Main Beach.
Sheryl McLay – headcoach for “Team Shorebreak Aquatics”, also organising the weekly swim “Team Shorebreak Ocean Swim Series” in Mt Maunganui. She encourages all ages to participate in swimming with squad sessions and ocean swim training.
“She works so hard to encourage our youth and our oldies to get in the ocean and swim. Whether you’re a top notch athlete, a weekend warrior, a trainee lifeguard, whomever, Sheryl is always there at Pilot Bay or Moturiki working in the waves.” – Michelle Richardson
Roger Soulsby – one of the main organisers/coordinators of the “Fur Seals” ocean swim group, formed back in 1994 in St Heliers, Auckland.
“I’d like to recommend all of the FurSeals for their continuous commitment to help new ocean swimmers to change the fear, with the respect and pleasure ocean swimming can give you, it is difficult to put one name forward as they are all supporting new ocean swimmers, but Roger Soulsby is the person I would name” – Jacques Paul de Reuck
Each of these swimmers won a free entry into the Generation Homes Sand to Surf event, a t-shirt and a post-event lunch.
