Meet Laura Quilter….
Our next Swimfluencer for the 2023/24 Season.
Laura was born in Gisborne and took part in her first Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014! Laura makes excellent podcasts & swim videos that will inspire you into (or back into) the water this season. You can read about Laura, her top tips for new swimmers, and why she will Swimfluence you into the water this season.
How long have you been swimming? | Over 20 years... I can't believe I can say that now! |
Why do you swim? | My 'why' has changed over the years. As a competitive swimmer, I wanted to see how fast I could go and represent New Zealand. Now I swim for well-being and social connection. I still really enjoy a tough set- that's one thing that has never changed. |
What’s your favourite event in the series & why? | Interislander Swim the Lighthouse. The year I did this race the weather was atrocious- but everyone was laughing and smiling on the beach! It made the event a surprisingly fun challenge. One of my favourite parts of the Ocean Swim Series is the opportunity to take on a personal challenge and combine it with seeing friends and family from out of town. |
What do you hope to achieve by becoming a Swimfluencer? | I hope to help people improve their technique through videos on social media. I enjoy helping people to feel better in the water, and am always keen to answer questions |
If you had ONE PIECE of advice for a new ocean swimmer - what would it be? | Find a squad or a pod of friends. You can alleviate a lot of stress or anxiety when surrounded by good people- and a post-swim coffee is better with others! |
