A rare opportunity to race around one of Auckland’s most iconic maritime landmarks.
The Bean Rock Swim
Located in the middle of the harbour shipping channel, Bean Rock is surrounded by tidal movement and regular vessel traffic. Because of this, it’s not a swim that can safely be attempted by individuals on their own. Opportunities to swim around Bean Rock only happen occasionally when the right conditions, safety planning, and water support are in place.
The race starts from the shoreline before swimmers head out across the harbour toward Bean Rock. Competitors will round the lighthouse before making the return journey back to shore, completing a unique harbour course that very few swimmers ever get the chance to experience.
We’re proud to re-introduce the the Bean Rock Swims and the perfect chance to bring the BEAN back to life.
Swimmers can take on the Full Bean – 3.4km, a stunning harbour loop around Bean Rock and its famous lighthouse. If you’re after something a little shorter, the Half Bean – 1.7km delivers the same magic in a more manageable hit. And if you’re building confidence in the open water, the Quarter Bean – 800m is the perfect place to start.
For the next generation, our FREE OceanKids swims (100m & 200m) are all about fun, participation, and getting young swimmers comfortable and confident in the ocean.

Did You Know?
Fun facts about ocean swimming
Decembers Average air temp: ~22°C daytime, ~17°C evening Average water temp (Mission Bay/Auckland): ~19–21°C
Salt water is slightly denser than pool water → you float better (yes, it’s helping you… a bit) Add a swimming wetsuit to that can swim 10-15% faster than swimwear.
Regular ocean swimming can reduce stress levels and improve mental wellbeing.
Most swimmers zig-zag slightly — even the good ones — so your “3.4km” might secretly be 3.8km+ Top tip, get some new goggles with clear anti fogged lens to help you see the buoys and swim straighter.
Ocean swimmers often report better sleep quality and increased energy levels.
